International Women’s Day was an interesting occasion this week.
New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof released his video entitled “What Are You Carrying?” which documents his visit to eastern Congo where women “lug huge jerry cans of water for miles” and where Kristof borrowed a load of wood a woman had strapped to her head — and nearly toppled over after trying it on himself. He also visited a construction site at the City of Joy, which is a community of Congolese rape survivors. The women working there routinely balance 18-kilogram containers of wet cement on their heads and “make it look effortless,” according to Kristof. But he adds, “bear in mind, most of these women . . . are malnourished and have huge parasite loads, such as intestinal worms. As a result, many have levels of anemia that would get them an immediate blood transfusion if they turned up at an American hospital.”
