Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain

Do all curricula develop like this?

This evening I had an exciting discovery.  I was reminded of a text book my friend Emily lent to me after I confessed to her somewhere in India that my skill level in drawing is below that of a special needs kindergartener.  No exaggeration.

I enrolled in Betty Edwards’ school tonight, which she describes as “a course in enhancing creativity and artistic confidence.”  And I’ve already completed the first lesson: a self portrait, a sketch of my nephew Avery by memory, and a sketch of my own hand.  The purpose of the lesson was to identify my symbol system and to highlight that I’m stuck with the basic shapes I recognized as a child.  The exercises were for encouragement only… drawings to file away and pull out once the course is finished.  I’m excited to learn at drawing (something I never imagined or thought possible).

Here’s an example of the progress of one of Edwards’ students after a 5 day intensive course shown at her site:

I hope to have a success story that compares (only I have more room to grow).
