Last Tuesday, the U.N. Secretary-General reported that violence caused more than 230,000 Darfuri civilians to flee their homes in 2008 alone.
With hundreds of thousands dead, 2.5 million displaced, and the badly needed UNAMID peacekeepers still only partially deployed, one thing is clear: we need U.S. leadership on Darfur more than ever.
As communications director for the Save Darfur Coalition, I’ve been paying close attention to the strong words from both Senators McCain and Obama during this campaign. And like many of you, I watched as both they and their running mates addressed Darfur directly in the debates.
But at the end of the day, what matters is bringing relief to the Darfuri people. Heartfelt speeches and strong words must turn into strong actions. Will the next president keep faith with the people of Darfur?
It’s up to you, to ensure they achieve these goals:
- Protection of civilians from violence, starvation and disease
- Sustainable peace for all Sudan
- Justice for victims and accountability for perpetrators
For the biggest impact, we need to add 20,000 more voices before the election.
Your voice has meant so much to our movement. I can’t thank you enough for everything you’ve done. We still have important work to do together, and I know we can continue to count on you.
