New Crops
Fence through a field-
dissecting
a shy harvest
of modest yield.
And in this long-spent soil
we see a line -
stand up straight,
let’s check your spine.
You may think it silly
that no one else is laughing, but
these barriers and markings
are not without reason.
They make sure the fields
give birth in due season.
They’re the laws of the land,
not frivolous shows;
they’re the roads that will lead us
to the field that will grow.
So let’s set our feet to walking -
have you had enough play?
We both know
the crops here
have seen far better days.
I’ve heard,
in that far, distant land
they only know one
warm horizon, and our
hungry flesh will
beg towards
the place we rest
our eyes on.
